Youth Support
Young Refugees and Asylum Seekers

Why do we need this study?

When young people and children come to other countries such as UK seeking asylum, they often do not know their exact age or may not have any papers.

These Asylum seeking children need to undergo an age assessment process.  This is usually done by a social worker who often concludes that the child or younger person is older than they claim to be.

A medical report is very useful in this case. Our age assessment methods are very thorough and we believe they are accurate. They are conducted through Youth Support by Dr Diana Birch who is very experienced in the care of children and teenagers and has developed a comprehensive method of age assessment.

There is however a great deal of controversy and many social service departments and sometimes the Home Office do not believe that we have accurate information about the health and development of immigrants and refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq or Iran or the many other ethnic groups.

We therefore need to collect health information from refugees and immigrant families and use this information to back up our assessments and to improve our techniques.
